Despite the fact that females were looked upon as second class citizens, some of the female goddesses had power and influences. A few goddesses that had power and influences are Demeter, Hera and Aphrodite. Demeter’s roman name was ceres and she was the goddess of agriculture. Hera’s roman name was juno and she was the goddess of Marriage. Aphrodite’s roman name was venus and she was the goddess of love, beauty and fertility. Demeter was one of the many goddesses that had power and influences. She was the goddess of agriculture and was also the daughter of Cronus and Rhea. Demeter creates the art of growing using corn. Fields of grain and the threshing-floor were under her power and protection. She was one of the great gods of Earth, nursed one of Metaneira children and taught Triptolemus and Celsius her sacred rites. Demeter was known as a sorrowful mother where her daughter had been taken after by Hades. She had the powers over earth, and therefore after her daughter was kidnapped, the earth would stop bringing plants until she was with her daughter. It is said that “Demeter was so enraged that she refused to return to Olympus and instead wandered the earth forbidding it to give forth its fruits” (Head 25). She was a kind goddess but was just as prone to vengeance to other Olympian gods. Hera was another one of the many goddesses that had power and influences, she was the goddess of marriage. She was married to her brother Zeus’ and was his jealous and proud wife. She was the daughter of Titan Cronus and Rhea. Her symbols were a pomegranate, cow, feather, and a peacock. The pomegranate represents fertility, Hera had the power of patron in childbirth. The cow represented her scared animal, the power in her watchfulness over her subjects while nurturing. The feather represented the iridescent feathers having eyes of a peacock. The peacock represented he proudness, luxury, beauty and immortal in which she had influenced. Hera had many powers such as being titled as the queen of heaven, or the olympian gods and the protector of women presiding over marriages and births. She had a great deal of power it was stated that “Many mortals were to suffer as a result of Zeus’ and Hera’s domestic quarrels, since Hera had a great deal of power herself” (Head 11). One redeeming qualities Hera had was that she never got injured. She was powerful on her own before she married to Zeus, this making her an independant women. Hera had ruled over the heavens and earth including the seasons and weather. She was also responsible for the existence of every aspect. She was worshipped the month of June because it was the most popular time to get marriages and weddings. Aphrodite was also a part of the many goddesses that had powers and influences. She was the goddess of love, beauty and fertility. She was a beautiful goddess born from the sea and older than time. According to her birth, “There are many accounts of her birth, the most famous being that she rose naked, and fully grown, from the sea. Another account suggests that she rose from the blood of Uranus after he was wounded by Cronus. In later accounts, Zeus claimed her as his own daughter, although Hera was not the mother” (Head 12). People adored her beauty, gentle manner and her amorous adventure. Her prostitutes considered the goddess of love, their patrons. It was said that “It is interesting to note that her symbol was a white dove. She was connected with fertility, growth and harvesting of crops. Aphrodite also had a transformative power called love. She had powers to give out good looks to whom she had favored and controlled over love, lust and beauty. Even though she was mainly only the goddess of love, she was one of the most powerful Olympians goddess. She was considered goddess of vegetation in rome and she protected the gardens and vineyards. After the Romans met the Greeks, they realized that Aphrodite was not meant to be an agriculture goddess.
