During my research process I found that there are some very interesting reasons for the experiment. One of them was that regular commercial fertilizers are harming this planet and could potentially destroy the coral reefs. When you throw them away it won’t decompose, and causes lots of trouble with pollution. People find that using fertilizer is great with all the nutrients, but sometimes they don’t stop to think ” Is this causing trouble with our planet?”.The fertilizer I’m using is renewable, and comes from everyday items that will not cost you more than $1. My fertilizer will decompose and will not harm our planet. If the coffee grounds, Egg shells, and banana peels grow faster, this could even help many farmers and plant growers with getting their crops ready. This report will include information about the fertilizer I am using, The way I am measuring, Information on people that I have interviewed, some interesting facts, and what I have learned. This report will also include some pictures and also a bibliography at the back. The items that I am using for my project as a fertilizer contain many useful nutrients that are essential for a plants growing. You may be wondering, ” what is a fertilizer ?”. A fertilizer consists of many items that help a plant grow, especially including NPK ( talked about later ).In the coffee grounds, the main nutrients are: Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, and potassium- Potassium being the highest one measured in the coffee grounds. Potassium is one of the most important nutrients in commercial fertilizer. Some of the things potassium helps with is It helps build proteins in the plant, and can even fight off diseases. The coffee grounds also help with the soil’s structure, and can help with the acid inside it. With the egg shells, the main components were Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, and Calcium- Calcium being the highest one measured in the egg shells. Calcium is a big part in the cell wall (a part of the plant cell- picture at bottom). Calcium can help strengthen the plant also. The phosphorus inside the egg shells in another crucial component in commercial fertilizer. The egg shells in the plant will also end the rotting. With the banana peels, the main nutrients were Potassium, Calcium, and Manganese – Potassium once again being the highest one measured in the banana peels. The potassium does have the same effects on the banana peels as it does on the coffee grounds. The banana peels themselves will fend off any plant eating animals, such as the Aphid. To measure the growth rate of my plants, I realized that there are a lot of ways to do it. One way I found useful is that you can count how many leaves there are. The plants leaves can tell how healthy the plant is. You can tell if the leaves are different by colour, texture and appearance. Healthy leaves have a perfect balance of NPK ( Stands for nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium). Without enough of these nutrients, your plants would not be very healthy. Your plants leaves can also be caused by things like overwatering. If you see that your leaf is yellow, that means it has too much water.
