His name is Lee Ming Kit, a 20 years old college student. Usually, he
have to use laptop to complete his tasks at least four to five every day. At
the same time, he is also a gamer who will play games at least three hours per
day. Thus, the duration he facing the laptop minimum seven hours per day.
As showed on the figure above, his sitting posture when using laptop is
not right. First of all, his sitting posture that lean forward to desk and hips
did not go in the chair is wrong. This sitting posture may result in localised back
pain and deep ache in muscles due to there is inadequate back support for the
back (especially lumbar). Because he will maintain this posture continuous for
few hours so he might have high risk of getting sciatic nerve impairment which
is a common condition for people who sit for prolonged periods of time.
Moreover, his feet is dangling which contribute to muscular tension and low back
pain as well.
Furthermore, his elbow flexed for
a long period while using keyboard or mouse. This action can cause him
experience pain in the ring and little fingers, swelling and numbness as well.
Sometimes, he might experience reduced grip strength in hand.
The solution or treatment for
this situation will be adjusting the sitting posture by adjust the chair to the
suitable height. The suitable height for the hand should be below than elbow
and wrists and hands are straight to
avoid elbow flexed for long period when using mouse or keyboard. So, the
solution will be either buy a new chair that has adjustable features or a
lumbar support pad to support the back and adjust to the suitable height. This
is because the lumbar support pad or cushion can adjust the back of the chair
to a 100°-110° reclined angle. https://www.wikihow.com/Sit-at-a-Computer
Otherwise, he should push his hips
as far back as can go in the chair and put a footrest which will give an angle
of tilt and a height that works best for the natural posture alignment. https://www.healthline.com/health/sitting-positions#put-your-feet-on-the-floor
Make sure the feet are flat on the floor and the knees equal to or slightly
lower than hips.
For the keyboard of laptop, adjust
the angle of the keyboard by using keyboard tray or keyboard feet based on a
person sitting position. The keyboard should slightly tilt forward when the person
is slight tilt back. But when the person sitting in an upright position, the keyboard
should tilting away from the person.
Next, take a short and frequent
breaks every two hours by walking around, standing or doing stretching in order
to release the muscle tension. Besides that, people should try to get away from
laptop or computer screen during breaks to avoid development of eye fatigue. Fatigue
eye can be treated by covering the eyes with palms for 10 to 15 seconds.
For the wrist exercise, it can be
carried out by pushing on top of the fingers, and using backward resistance
movements. This exercise should repeat for each hand at least six times a day. This
simple exercise will avoid a person from developing carpal tunnel finger
problems in the future.
In conclusion, a correct sitting
posture is a very important step or habit to prevent unnecessary symptoms and
consequences from occurring.
