“Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody’s going to know whether you did it or not.” (Oprah Winfrey). In today’s world most people want to do what is “cool” to fit in with others, even when it is wrong. However, in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, it shows the reader that even though most people in a community like Maycomb are doing the wrong thing, there are still people out there who do what is right. Atticus Finch, Mrs.Maudie, and Boo Radley are those characters who show the most integrity and dignity. Lee demonstrates to the reader that, people with integrity, whether it was from 50 years ago or the present times, are the ones that people look up to. Atticus Finch is known to be a good man who respects everyone around him and sees the dignity in people. Atticus shows integrity by taking the case of Tom Robinson. He knows it is highly unlikely for him to win, but defends him anyway because Atticus knows that Tom is an innocent man. His daughter, Scout, tells him that the kids in school make fun of him for defending a “negro”. Atticus tells Scout that he is indeed defending one, but she should never use that word. Atticus explains to Scout that he has a very low chance of winning the trial, but is still going to defend Tom because he is an innocent man. It is his job as a lawyer to do the right thing. “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win.” (Lee pg 101). Atticus also mentions that racism has been engraved in Maycomb, and that will be the reason why Tom will lose the trial. But that does not mean that he can not fight for justice and do what is right. Atticus is indeed a man who shows great integrity. He does what is right despite of what others think or say. Miss Maudie is one of the most open-minded people in the community. She shares her morals with Jem and Scout by helping them understand the difference between right and wrong. A person is not bad because of the colour of their skin, but people become bad from their actions. When the children get air rifles for Christmas, Atticus tells them that they can shoot anything but a mockingbird because it is a sin to kill one. Jem and Scout ask Miss Maudie why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. She says “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (Lee pg 119). This quote clearly shows that Miss Maudie views each person with dignity and respect, regardless of their skin colour. She believes that an innocent person such as Tom Robinson should not be punished because he has done nothing wrong. Miss Maudie is a good lady who stays true to her morals and even imparts it with others.. In Maycomb, Boo Radley has a bad reputation. When he was younger, he was known to hang out with a bad group of kids. When he was 33, he stabbed his father in the leg with a pair of scissors, and was temporarily put in the county jail. He is also rumored to eat raw squirrels and cats, and his hands would be stained by their blood. But Boo Radley is a person who cares for others. When Miss Maudie’s house was on fire, Atticus told Jem and Scout to stand in front of Boo Radley’s house. While Atticus helps take the furniture out of the house, Boo places a blanket over the children to keep them warm. “You were so busy looking at the fire you didn’t know it when he put the blanket around you.” (Lee pg 96). Boo Radley is also a man of courage. While Jem and Scout are walking home from the school play, Bob Ewell attacks them. Boo saw from his window that the kids were helpless and needed help. Boo runs to their rescue from the hands of Mr.Ewell. “Anyway, Jem hollered and I didn’t hear him any more an’ the next thing–Mr.Ewell was tryin’ to squeeze me to death, I reckon..then somebody yanked Mr.Ewell down. Jem must have got up, I guess. That’s all I know…” (Lee pg 361). Even though Scout thought it was Jem who saved her, it was really Boo who saved her. Regardless of all the rumours about him, Boo Radley is a man of integrity. He continues to do what is right even when no one is watching. To conclude, in a community filled with prejudiced people, it is still possible to find good people with integrity. Atticus is a man who shows strong morals who fights for those who are right, but has no voice. His integrity inspires others to live with integrity, like his children Jem and Scout. Miss Maudie shows that you should not hurt or accuse others who are innocent, like mockingbirds that do nothing but singing sweet noise to us. Lastly Boo Radley, despite of him being known to be a bad guy, he is capable of showing care and compassion even when no one is really watching. In any person’s life, they have the choice to make the right decisions to make life our everdaylives we have to make decisions. In Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s words, “The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.” This is what Atticus, Miss Maudie, and Boo Radley has done in a place that is filled with prejudice.
