The first step to do as an interior
designer is to conduct site survey to gather information like the measurements
of the space or the surrounding area. This is an important step for accurate
measurement in making technical drawings. Plan and elevations is one of the
technical drawings that I needed to make. From making floor plan and elevations
I learned the importance of using different light weights starting from light,
medium and bold lines. Drawings will be read by builders, electricians or any
other trades so it is necessary to draw precise lines for neat, clear drawings and
to avoid any mistakes.

Observation is one of the skills I learned. From
conducting survey to making technical drawing I started to notice any details that
is needed such as taking notes if there are any flaws or features that can help
me for making new designs. When I started to draw my technical drawing, I
noticed that there were too many furniture’s and there was no available space
for people to walk in. I learned that there should be enough space between
furniture’s and to make sure that the furniture is in the right size. This is
where I found out that it is required to have at least 500mm space between
furniture’s for people to walk safely. I must also imagine what my new designs
going to be and by doing this I was able to develop my visualization skill and
my creativity. I learned this skill a lot when I was doing my sample board and
colour rendering. Sample board is one of the most important things to present
to the client, so they can have a clear sight of what the new designs going to
be with all the furniture’s and other products. I need to visualize first what
the room should be and use my creativity to put all the products in order in
the sample board. Doing this will make the board more appealing to look at and
the client won’t be confused by all the arrangements. But sample board is not
enough to convince the client, so I needed to add more life to my drawings and
make it more attractive. Technical drawing can be confusing but when rendered
with colours it will be more understandable. Visualising the colour balance of
the space is one of the most important factors, which I did not consider at first,
but I was able to learn from a mistake. The space should have a balance appearance
and keeping in mind what the client asked for.

These skills will help me a lot in the future as an
interior designer. Observational skill will be helpful to me when conducting
site survey. It will help me focus more and be aware of what is needed to do
such as noticing what area needs to be improve. If I develop this skill more I
will be able to spot on any mistakes on my design easily. When I need to
produce ideas, I need to visualize the room as well. Visualize helps me create
designs in my mind. As an example, when picking furniture’s, I need to
visualize if the shape or colour is suitable in the room.

As Alina Wheeler says, “Design is intelligence made visible”.
Therefore, while design ideas are important, the idea should be presented visually
to make the client understand more. To do this, skills or techniques should be used
for a chance that the clients will approve the proposals and is eager to start the
