The hide and seek. The other people around

The poem Hide and Seek is a poem by Vernon
Scannell and is mostly written in the 1st person of a boy playing
Hide and Seek, a game which every kid has had numerous memories playing, he
starts with great enthusiasm and excitement with but as the poem goes along his
emotions darken. Vernon Scannell uses iambic rhyme which sets the tone for the
poem but it can also be associated with childish games and songs, for example
nursery rhymes. The poet also uses rhyming couplets which again associate with
children remembering what they hear better with rhyme. In line 1, “Call out.

Call loud: I’m ready! Come and find me!”, showing the use of punctuation
suggest that the child is overjoyed about being in the game. For the child, it
is thrilling experience but also competitive because he ideally wants to win
the game.  The child chooses a great spot
to hide where he is optimistic that no one will find him but after a while he
starts to feel discomforted, “The floor is cold”, mirror the child’s feelings
towards being lonesome. “You mustn’t sneeze when they come prowling in”, shows
that the poet has shifted towards the 2nd person to as if he the
poet is telling the boy what to do by giving some advice to him. The use of
childhood is part of a far greater thing, the incentive is not just about a
childhood game but about life as a whole. The different things that the boy had
to deal with choosing thee specific hiding spot in the shed represents all of
the obstacles that an individual has to overcome walking down the straight path
in life but it’s the tenacity of the child and the good will that makes him
succeed in winning the game of hide and seek. The other people around the child
trying to look for him are disturbances and aiming to through the boy’s plan
off track showing the deeper meaning about needing the hunger to succeed in
life where a ranging of factors will try and bring you down.

The other poem Half-Past Two is written by
U.A. Fanthorpe. He is looking back at his childhood at school where he had a
detailed look on time. The poet uses large words such as, “timetogotohometime”,
or, “notimeforthatnowtime”, shows that the boy can’t understand the language of he has split his day into these different sections for time. The style
of the poem shows that a child is definitely speaking. The fact that the start
of the poem is, “Once upon a school time”, shows that of a typical children’s
book hence reinstating the fact of childhood. In the first stanza, the child
says he does, “Something Very Wrong”, which signifies importance due to the
uppercase letters and how he has heard that phrase before. Fanthorpe uses upper
case letters allot during the poem, this is to increase the significance and
how the child imagined the even to be. The poet personifies the clock, “the
little eyes and the two long legs walking”, shows the childishness because
child does not recognize the language it is in but it becomes easy when we grow
up as it is standard. Fanthorpe displays the innocence of a child as it learns
everything from what they see and imagine hence the clock looked like a face in
the mind of a small child but as we grow up it becomes second nature for us and
we don’t imagine the creative things that young people think of which could be
the message Fanthorpe is trying to convey, the fact that the human brain fails
to imagine creative images because we are constantly learning every day and
putting away everything from when we were young which shows a step from
innocence to maturity in the world.
