The industrial growth had began in the united states in the early 1800s and continued through the civil war, after the civil war american industry changed dramatically. Machines had replaced hand labour, inventors developed new products that the public wanted, and bankers supplied large amounts of money that business leaders needed to expand their operations. A new nationwide network of railways distributed goods far and wide. Industrialization had a positive impact/effect. industrialization led to urbanization, urbanization was the movement of people in the city and city building.Citizens wanted to live closer to the factories they worked at.The period of US history from the 1890s to the 1920s is usually referred to as the Progressive Era, an era of intense social and political reform aimed at making progress toward a better society. Progressive era reformers wanted to eliminate unfair business practices, reduce corruption, and counteract the negative social effects of industrialization. During the progressive era, protection for workers were strengthened and woman finally achieved the right to vote.  Progressivism began as a social movement and grew into a political movement. The early progressives rejected Social Darwinism. The first significant territorial expansion took place after the Spanish-American War of 1898, where the United States complemented its already held possession with new lands. The war that made the United States become more of an  imperial power was the Spanish-American War. By winning this war, the US got possession in the Philippines, Guam, and Hawaii. When Roosevelt became the president in 1900, he helped the US to become more of an imperial power by getting involved in Latin American affairs, and building the Panama Canal. By the time the United States entered World War I, it had already become an increasing imperial power. By the end of World War II, the United States was officially known as a superpower. The US played a big role in the outcome of WWI, however, the country tried very hard to stay neutral throughout most of the conflict. By 1917, Woodrow wilson’s policy and public opinion changed in favor of the US entry to World War I. Economic interests, The sinking of lusitania, and unrestricted submarine warfare was the biggest reasons on why the US entered WWI. A Lot of changes happened after war, The 19th amendment ( giving women the right to vote.),The 18th amendment (banned the sale and transport of alcoholic beverages).  WWI ended up killing the progressive movement.  In 1920, Wilson decided that the Democrats should make the election a “solemn referendum” on the League of Nations.  Up to this point, Republicans in the Senate had blocked US entry.  progressivism was now dead.”A return to normalcy,” was Warren G Harding’s slogan saying that america wanted to put the horrors of war behind them and get back normal. Normalcy to Harding meant: isolationism, nativism, and laissez-faire. The nation turned away from the reforming of the Progressive Era and the overall look of Wilson’s wartime leadership. Republicans returned to power in 1920. There was a lot of changes during this period, culturally : The harlem renaissance was when african americans from a town called harlem , they moved to find opportunities. They brought famous writers, musicians , and artists. Jazz was also brought into the cities and became very popular , called the jazz age. Socially: Farmers went into debt, poverty/ racism made it hard for african americans to get jobs, and ghettos. Economically : The stock market where people could invest in paying things off that are expensive( installment buying) , people were ready to buy things because they had a more disposable income, things got cheaper and people had more spending money.
