While the Locavore movement has been associated with issues concerning the production of products and how it is distributed; there are more favorable benefits that will impact the community such as decreasing health problems. Being able to produce and consume locally-grown goods will most definitely improve the community/nation’s health issues and exceed health standards. Online statistics reveal that one of the leading causes of illnesses, and sadly death is the harmful air pollution. Globally, pollution is now considered as a top factor for many diseases. Source A also contributes to my statement by stating. “better for air quality and pollution.” This is very accurate because transporting organic foods for long distances has and will continue to result in environmental damage. Which is one of the main reasons why Locavores strive to make eating locally a norm in today’s society. At the direction that our planet is now currently heading, we should do everything possible for the future our children, and grandchildren. As a result, eating locally will allow consumers to live a healthier lifestyle while continuing to protect our beloved planet. Source C mentions about how larger producers are able to transport more goods than a local farmer with the same amount of fuel being used. It explains how the ratio of transporting different amounts of produce and goods over different distances would consume the same amount of fuel. Although this may seem valid, it goes against improving nutritional value for consumers. The nutritional value of produce will be at its maximum when there is a shorter distance traveled. (Source B). Which means that the longer produce takes to travel, the more nutrition it will lose. Why would anyone not want to have a more nutritional meal for the benefit of a healthy life? Also, the environmental effect of food transportation is measured using food miles; which specifies how the amount of carbon dioxide that is being produced to transport goods over a unit distance. More transportation of food will produce more Carbon Dioxide, a greenhouse gas. More Carbon Dioxide would cause the planet to warm up, which is all contributing to global warming. If the distribution of food were to be limited to local communities, then there would be an enormous reduction in Carbon Dioxide. In order to gain nutrition and diminish gases that may be harmful to us and our planet, we must encourage the development and advancement of eating locally-grown foods. The benefits overcome the negative effects when discussing the topic of locavores. Due to a large and outlying distribution of goods, people are missing out on the nutritional value that can be gained from their daily meals. By not contributing to the locavore movement, you are also being exposed to harmful and detrimental health issues. Become a Locavore.
